Dirk Johannßen of Kohl Direkt:

"Everyone is advertising Dithmarsch white cabbage now"

Many vegetable products, above all imported goods, are currently in short supply. However, white cabbage from the northern German growing region of Dithmarschen seems to be benefiting from this. "Everyone is now advertising Dithmarsch white cabbage, as most other vegetable items are scarce and expensive. Due to the increased retail promotions, enormous volumes are currently being sold," says Dirk Johannßen, cabbage producer from Neufelderkoog and co-founder of the marketing platform Kohl Direkt, founded in 2021.

Due to the drought last summer, cabbage yields were below average. However, this has evened out in the course of the marketing season, Johannßen continues. "I would describe the current destocking as normal to somewhat more advanced than usual at this time of year. Nevertheless, even with today's sales volumes, we will have enough product into June. Both riser and industrial grade is more than sufficient and available in all desired calibers."

In terms of price, white cabbage is currently selling for between 0.30-0.40 euros/kg, depending on the grade. Johannßen: "This is above last year's level, but in view of the increased electricity and storage costs, the whole thing is put into perspective again. In general, however, prices are within a tolerable range." Red cabbage is slightly more expensive compared to white cabbage, he said, but is not considered a promotional product, so marketing volumes are considerably lower.

Temporary onset of winter in Dithmarschen

Start of the export season
"What is also benefiting us are the low temperatures that currently exist in large parts of Europe. The question, of course, is how long that will last," Johannßen stated. Meanwhile, the northern German cabbage industry is looking abroad, because traditionally around this time of year there are increased demands on the export market. "Sales in the direction of Scandinavia are firm and stable, and interest from the rest of Europe is now gradually gaining momentum."
