Pieter de Ruiter, 4Fruit Company

"I don't see unbelievably high Spanish greenhouse vegetable prices changing any time soon"

"Unbelievable, these prices. We've been in business for a few years now, so we've naturally seen occasional outliers, but prices have been outlandish for days," says Pieter de Ruiter of 4Fruit Company in the Netherlands. "I don't see the market situation changing any time soon either. There's genuinely significantly less coming from Spain."

"Bell peppers are selling for €23 to €25 per box, cucumbers for €15-€16, and eggplants for between €16 and €17. It's truly incredible. And, of course, some customers order half a pallet instead of a whole one, but that's just as well because there's much less trade available."

"Don't forget that Spain had great weather in November and December. The plants were very productive, and we had unexpectedly bad prices. Now the plants are exhausted, and Almeria and the surrounding areas, as well as Murcia, are experiencing cold weather. So, Spain is sending far less. We also still have to wait a while for the Dutch supply. The high gas prices prevented many growers from filling their greenhouses," Pieter concludes.
