Jos vegetable farmers in trouble as prices plummet

Tomato farmers around Jos, the administrative capital and largest city of Plateau State, are in trouble due to the current situation of the price of tomatoes in the market, occasioned by the non-availability of the naira notes in the country. Growers are already counting losses as the price of tomatoes continues to fall due to the scarcity of naira notes in the hands of buyers. They claim the scarcity of the naira notes is entirely the cause of the crash of the prices of vegetables.

Perishable goods such as tomato, cabbage, pepper, cucumber, among others, are often very challenging to handle, manage, store and maintain their qualities, adding that managing perishable products is not a simple task.

The scarcity of naira notes in the country is no longer news, and experts say the development is affecting virtually all sectors of the economy, leading to some small businesses losing their business capital.
