Christian Mählmann, Managing Director of Mählmann Gemüsebau & Co.:

"With European competitors entering the market, the competitiveness is increasing across products"

Iceberg lettuce and broccoli are among the main products of Mählmann Gemüsebau & Co. from the Oldenburg Münsterland. As Managing Director Christian Mählmann told us, the broccoli comes exclusively from the company's own fields and it is sold throughout Germany. Other European countries are also being supplied. Customers are both retailers and various wholesalers.

Sufficient domestic goods until December
"We can offer large volumes of domestic broccoli, all the way into December," says Mählmann. "Due to the market entry of European competitors, the competitiveness is increasing across products. Although we can still offer sufficient domestic and high-quality broccoli into December, people are increasingly turning to foreign products."

In view of the current weather conditions, the company is able to offer broccoli of the best quality, he said. Mählmann: "This year, we can offer broccoli on the market four weeks longer than last year. In total, the period will go from the end of May until December. Due to inflation, we also had to adjust sales prices. Increased costs in areas such as personnel, energy and packaging caused increased operating costs in general."

"Currently, more emphasis is again being placed on inexpensive, conventional products. Due to the price increases caused by inflation, expensive food as well as organic products have become a kind of luxury item. We certainly feel this in the vegetable segment," the managing director told us.
