"It has been a weird start of the campaign for artichokes, made even more peculiar by the health emergency and subsequent drop in consumption. There was a considerable delay in production due to the fact that temperatures in Sardinia are still high and have reached 24-25°C over the past few days," reports Salvatore Lotta, sales manager of the Agricola Campidanese PO.
"We have not witnessed constant volumes - there are days when no produce is arriving at our plants, though our processing lines are always operational. After all, this is not all bad as, had we had normal volumes, there would have definitely been a surplus and prices would have dropped, as demand is not high."
"Compared to November 2019, orders have dropped by around 30%. Markets are not operating at full capacity due to the limitations for the H&R sector, but requests seems to have dropped from the big retail chain as well, especially in regions with higher demand such as Lombardy and Piedmont. We are hoping that the next few weeks will be better and that the Christmas period will help push fresh produce sales as they have slowed down compared to the first lockdown."
