Ton Slagter:

"Good European demand for cauliflower in qualitatively difficult year"

"Lorries of cauliflower are leaving all at once, especially for export," says Ton Slagter of the Fa. P.N. Slagter from Andijk, active in the cultivation and trade of cauliflower. "At the moment the demand is really huge. Both from Southern European countries such as Italy and Spain, as well as from Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. Prices are already at a good level all year round. In day trade the price of cauliflower is currently around 1 Euro. Last week the market was weaker, but this week there has been a significant recovery, although this can be explained purely by the export demand."

"The supply of Dutch cauliflower is limited and in terms of quality it has been a difficult year for open-ground vegetables anyway, although the differences between the different varieties are large. This also applies to spinach and broccoli. Fortunately, we are now seeing an improvement in quality. With an easterly wind and warm weather this is just about also the best recovery weather we could wish for, because the extreme heat and moisture made it particularly difficult in West Friesland. "

The grower expects to deliver Dutch cauliflower at least until Sinterklaas (December 5th). "The broccoli trade shows the same picture. The quality of broccoli was perhaps even more difficult than the cauliflower, but the price level for broccoli is also very good. Fortunately, that compensates for it somewhat."
