In Bulgaria, the market shares of domestic and imported tomatoes show that despite the predominance of imported vegetables, the demand for domestic tomatoes is on the rise.
This has been revealed by data from the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Markets (SCBS). While in 2019 the ratio was 81% to 19%, in June this year it has become 65% to 35%.
The same is observed with other vegetables. For example, last year Bulgarian cucumbers accounted for 23% of the supply, while this summer their market share has reached 59%.
However, this is not the case with potatoes. While the share of Bulgarian potatoes in 2019 reached 72%, in June 2020 it had dropped to 44%.
There are also more imported apples. Last year, they accounted for 55% of the supply, while this summer the share of imports is already 89%.
In general, fruit and vegetable prices in the past eight months of this year stand at around the same levels or above those of 2019. Fruit prices are similar to the ones recorded in previous years.
