Downward trend for tomato prices in Russia

This week, tomato producers in the Russian Federation have again been forced to lower their selling prices, as reported by EastFruit project analysts. According to market operators, the main reason for this is the excess supply in the local tomato market.

Thus, transactions for the sale of open ground tomatoes have been closed at 10-25 rubles / kg ($ 0.15-0.38 / kg), which is on average 28% cheaper than at the end of the previous working week. At the same time, the tomatoes shipped from greenhouse plants have been sold at a price of 25-35 rubles / kg ($ 0.38-0.53 / kg), which is on average 22% cheaper than a week earlier.

The reason for this price situation is the increase in the supply of tomatoes from both the open ground and the summer greenhouses, which have been shipped from the southern regions of the country. At the same time, the demand for these products has been limited. As a result, traders are forced to bring prices downward to avoid the accumulation of large volumes of unsold products in warehouses, the quality of which has been gradually deteriorating.

It is worth noting that the prices of greenhouse tomatoes on the Russian market today are already on average 28% lower than in the same period last year, although open ground tomato prices are similar to those recorded at the end of August 2018.
