Cauliflowers lend color to Malkangiri farmers' lives

In Malkangiri, under the guidance of Khairaput agriculture officials, two tribal farmers from Madakapadar and Badadural villages have embarked on an innovative venture in vegetable cultivation. Utilizing colored cauliflower varieties over a two-acre spread, these farmers have leveraged support from the Agriculture department through the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) scheme. Dambaru Mali and Balaram Mali, the farmers in question, have adopted organic farming practices for this endeavor.

The cultivation of these vibrant cauliflowers has not only attracted consumers at local weekly markets in Mathili, Khairaput, Govindpalli, Mundiguda, and Ambliguda but has also fetched them a premium price ranging from Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg. Initially met with skepticism over the use of artificial coloring, the local populace has grown to appreciate the natural cultivation process and the health benefits of these colored cauliflowers, which are rich in essential minerals and known to boost the immune system.

Khairaput agriculture officer Hemant Kumar Padhiary highlighted the suitability of the region's hilly terrain for cauliflower cultivation, underscoring the nutritional value of these colored varieties akin to broccoli. The initiative has sparked interest among other farmers in the district, signaling a potential shift towards more diverse and organic vegetable farming practices.
