Tien Giang targets demanding international markets with dragon fruit

The Mekong Delta's Tiền Giang province, renowned as Vietnam's leading fruit producer, has dedicated over 6,140 hectares to the cultivation of dragon fruit. This area, spread across Chợ Gạo, Tân Phước, Gò Công Tây, and Gò Công Đông districts, is earmarked for exports to discerning markets in Japan, the US, South Korea, and Australia.

Chợ Gạo District, with 6,870 hectares, is the province's primary dragon fruit farming region. Around 5,640 hectares are currently being harvested, yielding approximately 190,000 tons annually. The district's dragon fruit has earned a collective brand name from the National Office of Intellectual Property, and the establishment of co-operatives ensures adherence to good agricultural practices and origin traceability.

Despite the challenges of saltwater intrusion during the dry season, farmers in Gò Công Đông District's Kiềng Phước Commune have successfully transitioned from rice to red flesh dragon fruit cultivation. With high prices this year, farmers are reaping significant profits. Red flesh dragon fruit is fetching VNĐ30,000-35,000 ($1.3-1.5) per kilogram, three times last year's price.

Recognizing the high export value of dragon fruit, Tiền Giang province has prioritized the improvement of its specialty fruits' competitiveness. The province has over 2,306 hectares of GAP standard dragon fruit, with a goal of expanding to 3,600 hectares by 2025.
