Murcia's melon exports have fallen by 40% in the last 5 campaigns

In the 2022/2023 season, the province of Murcia revalidated its position as the main melon exporter in Spain, contributing 47.39% of the national total. However, according to a report by Hortoinfo based on data from the Estacom statistical service (Icex-Tax Agency), there's been a downward trend in the export volume during the last five consecutive years.

In this last campaign, Spain exported a total of 318.52 million kilos of melon, generating revenues worth 301.97 million euro, with an average price of 0.95 euro per kilo.

The province of Murcia led exports by contributing 150.96 million kilos; however, that amount is 40% lower than the 252.62 million kilos it exported five campaigns ago.

The value of the melon exported by Murcia in the last season improved slightly over the previous campaign totaling 143.97 million euro, and achieving an average price of 0.95 euro per kilo

Almeria was the second-largest melon-exporting province, with a volume of 69.36 million kilos, accounting for 21.78% of the national total. Almeria's melon exports have declined by 16% since the 2018/2019 campaign.

During the 2022/2023 season, Almeria's exports generated a value of 62.56 million euro, with an average price of 0.9 euro per kilo.

Valencia was the third-biggest exporter with 17.73 million kilos (5.57% of the total), revenues of 21.54 million euro, and an average price of 1.21 euro per kilo Valencia's melon exports have decreased by 11% in the last five years.

Ciudad Real ranked fourth with 16.9 million kilos (5.31% of the total), a value of 10.44 million euro, and an average price of 0.62 euro per kilo.

It was followed by Alicante with 16.31 million kilos (5.12% of the total), 13.94 million euro, and an average price of 0.85 euro per kilo.
