The Italian fresh produce industry is forging closer relationships with Dominican Republic producers with a recent visit to the island nation by the Macfrut team to encourage trade. An exporter based in the Dominican Republic, Cesar Perez from the exporting company Frescura Tropical, said: “I’m an exporter of fruits and vegetables, I’ve been opening markets in different part of the world for Dominican products to enter. I have been in Macfrut and all Fairs around Europe, but this particular fair is very important as the market in Italy is growing and we have been exporting for 30 years bananas, pineapples and now mangos and avocados.”

He was happy with the personal visit and presentations given by the leadership team of Macfrut who travelled to the Dominican Republic to meet with producers and exports face to face last month (November, 2023).
“During last month, Renzo Piraccini, president of Macfrut in Italy and other directors participated in two very important presentations on the island. One was in the Cultural Center Perello in Bani, and the other in the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Agriculture, where he talked about the importance of Dominican Republic and the participation of the most important products exported. In the same presentation he had time to speak to the Dominican Republic Mango Association about mango production for 2022. The Dominican Republic exported 30,800 tons of mango and will have 20% more production for 2023. Also the National Cluster of avocado offering the Hass and Tropical avocado giving the numbers for 2023 giving us Top 5 grower in the world of avocado exporting 55,000 tons in 2022 with 15% more expected for 2023,” explains Perez.
He says other Italian companies who were also present in the meetings provided new techniques on growing and the food process. “Piraccini’s goal is to make exchanges between Dominican Republic growers and buyers from the entire supply chain from Italy.”
Perez says they do not only focus on attending a trade show once a year, but use opportunities like these throughout the year to enhance trade and cooperation between the two countries. “The exchange with Macfrut gives Dominican growers and exporters more opportunities to export and to do business with Italian companies. It also provides the exchange of companies from Italy to do business with the Dominican Republic,” concludes Perez.
