Cabbage and cauliflower growers in Ambegaon district have abandoned their plantations due to the price crash in the wholesale market in the last few days. The farmers said as they cannot afford the harvest costs or the expenses for transportation to the market. Some coriander growers had a tough time at the Chakan APMC market on Sunday and Monday, being forced to dump their produce due to lack of demand.
A farmer from Pargaon village in Ambegaon, said: "I had invested around Rs 25,000 to plant cauliflower on one acre of land. However, the prices of vegetables crashed. A week ago, I had to sell a kg of cauliflower at Rs 7. Now it has fallen further below. As a result, I had to abandon my plantations as I cannot afford transportation and labor charges. Besides, if I do not clear the crops from the farm, I will not able to grow other vegetables."
