US Foods Holding Corp., one of the largest foodservice distributors in the United States, announced results for the second quarter fiscal year 2022. Second quarter fiscal 2022 highlights: Net income available to common shareholders improved to $61mln. Adjusted EBITDA increased 10.8% to $368mln. Six month fiscal 2022 highlights: Net income available to common shareholders was $45mln. Adjusted EBITDA increased 20.8% to $609mln.

US: NGA taps ReposiTrak as traceability, compliance partner
The National Grocers Association (NGA) has reached a multiyear agreement for ReposiTrak to be NGA’s traceability and supplier compliance partner. US: Weis enlists Invafresh to streamline fresh food operations
Weis Markets is teaming with fresh grocery platform Invafresh to deliver “the freshest foods” possible to its customers while also refining its product demand projections and cutting food waste. The partnership will streamline fresh food operations in the Sunbury, Pennsylvania-based grocer’s 198 stores by developing demand forecasting, in-store production planning, food traceability, recipe management and cut test management across all fresh departments.

US: Boxed tallies 11.2% retail sales growth in Q2
Lifted by double-digit gain in the second quarter, online bulk-products retailer Boxed Inc. finished its fiscal 2022 first half with retail sales up more than 11%. For the quarter ended June 30, consolidated net revenue - including the retail and Software & Services divisions - rose 3.1% to $43.7mln from $42.4mln a year earlier, New York-based Boxed reported.

Chile's Cencosud posts Q2 net loss, hit by Argentina's inflation
Chilean retailer Cencosud posted a quarterly loss of $21.9mln, as inflation in Argentina impacted its debt levels and forced it to write down the value of some assets. Stripping out the effects of the South American country's surging prices, the supermarket operator registered a profit of $65mln. Cencosud, one of South America's largest retailers, reported that its overall revenue increased 22% year-on-year to $3.812bln, excluding Argentina.

Brazil's Magazine Luiza posts Q2 adjusted net loss - hit by high interest rates
Brazilian retailer Magazine Luiza SA posted an adjusted net loss of 112.1mln reais ($21.76mln), posting a loss for the second straight quarter as its bottom line was hurt by the country's high interest rates. Magazine Luiza posted a 1.3% growth in total sales to 13.92bln reais. E-commerce sales grew 2% in the quarter to 10bln reais.

UK: Tesco electrifies deliveries to more than 400 city centre stores
In an industry first, Tesco has become the first retailer to launch a zero-emission electric lorry to make deliveries from its distribution centres to stores in city centres. The first electrically-powered lorry of its kind, made by Renault Trucks, is now delivering to more than 400 stores in Greater London, with further electric lorries entering service in the coming months. The lorry has a range of up to 130 miles and is able to carry the same payload as the diesel truck it replaces.

N. Macedonia's KAM opens most new supermarkets in Bulgaria's Sofia in H1 - Colliers
North Macedonia's discount supermarket chain operator KAM opened six stores in the Bulgarian capital Sofia in the first half of 2022, becoming the food retailer with the highest number of new openings in the period, Colliers Bulgaria, part of US-based professional services and investment management company Colliers International, said.

Announced during the official opening of its Singapore headquarters, Grab group CEO and co-founder Anthony Tan said that the initiatives are aimed at helping small businesses and upskilling the future workforce.

IGA and Foodland supermarket owners have been told by Metcash, the company that runs the network, not to increase shelf prices as inflation soars because it will actually make them less money. It is concerned pushing up prices will see customers ditch the independent retailers for Coles and Woolworths after fading IGA sales made a comeback during the pandemic.

Spain: Covirán opens four new supermarkets in July
Spanish proximity retail cooperative Covirán opened four supermarkets in the autonomous communities of Andalusia and Catalonia, in the provinces of Cadiz, Granada, Jaen and Barcelona. The new store openings have created 17 jobs and added 639 square metres of sales space to its network.
