More than nine in ten Americans can get food delivered at a click, new research finds, helping those who struggle to reach bricks and mortar stores. Food delivery zones now reach 93% of the U.S. population, according to research published by the Brookings Institution think-tank that looked at how the services improved access for so-called food deserts. Their expansion could be a "game-changer" for people who lack easy access to shops, and those facing mobility challenges or time constraints, the report said.
New Shipt CEO sees plenty of growth ahead for grocery deliveries
In an interview with the Star Tribune, CEO Kamau Witherspoon said Shipt will expand by diversifying the stores it delivers from including places such as local ethnic grocers. The business unit can build its last-mile delivery service further, including more packages from Target sortation centers. Witherspoon, a former Target executive, took the helm at Shipt after the business experienced two years of pandemic-fueled growth and rapid customer adoption of online shopping. Conditions are more volatile now, but Witherspoon remains positive on Shipt's odds.
US: Amazon makes Grubhub deal to give Prime members fee-free food
Amazon.com Inc has secured the right to buy a 2% stake in Just Eat Takeaway.com's Grubhub and will offer no-fee access to the service for a year to U.S. Prime members, hoping to boost subscriptions with a renewed push into meal delivery.
US: Walmart folds its InHome grocery delivery service into Walmart+ as an optional add-on
Walmart announced that its InHome grocery delivery service is now available as an optional add-on within its Walmart+ membership, the retailer’s low-cost alternative to Amazon Prime that offers free shipping with no minimums. The company notes that the two previously standalone memberships are being combined into one to offer a single streamlined experience for customers.

Italian supermarket chain Conad reported a turnover of €17bln last year, up 6.5% year-on-year, which was well ahead of the market average (+0.7%). Germany's Delivery Hero, Spanish unit Glovo targeted in EU antitrust raids
German online takeaway food company Delivery Hero and its Spanish business Glovo were raided by European Union antitrust regulators, the companies said, putting them at risk of hefty fines. The European Commission said earlier that online food and grocery delivery companies in two EU countries had been raided over concerns they may be in a cartel, but did not name the companies involved or the countries.
Germany: Metro AG raises full-year outlook following 'better than expected' Q3
Metro AG has raised its outlook for sales and EBITDA for the financial year 2021/22, following what it said was a 'better than expected' Q3 performance. The wholesale and cash and carry group said that sales in the third quarter were driven by rising inflation, a 'strong' momentum in its HoReCa business, and positive effects from its sCore growth strategy. Metro said that it now expects sales to grow by around 17% to 22% compared to the previous year, up from a 9% to 15% forecast issued previously.
Amazon investigated by UK antitrust watchdog over its marketplace practices
The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority said it is probing Amazon over practices affecting sellers on its domestic marketplace that “may be anti-competitive and could result in a worse deal for customers”. Amazon said it will “work closely” with the CMA during the probe. The CMA is investigating three areas including how Amazon collects and uses third-party seller data and whether this gives Amazon an unfair advantage when it comes to the decisions it makes with its retail business.
German antitrust watchdog subjects Amazon to stricter supervision rules
Germany's antitrust watchdog said that U.S. ecommerce giant Amazon's position is of outstanding, cross-market importance for competition, a classification that allows the authority to prohibit any anti-competitive behaviour at an earlier stage.
New Zealand: Countdown's 'price frozen' products have dropped in price since May
Countdown, which froze the price of more than 600 essential items on May 9 until the end of winter, had the cheapest cart this time round. The nine items came to $27.60, which was $1.30 cheaper than May, when the basket came to $28.90. Carrots, butter, bread, wheat biscuits, rice and oats were all included in the price freeze, but their prices had not stayed the same. A 2kg Odd Bunch bag of apples was $5, up from $3, while a 1kg bag of home-brand rice had dropped from $2.20 to $1.90.
