Peruvian organic banana exports fell by 20% in the first quarter of the year

According to a report by FreshFruit, Peruvian organic banana exports contracted by 20% in the first quarter of the year over the same period of 2021, totaling 46,550 tons worth 32.6 million dollars. The average price of the fruit remained at 0.70 dollars per kilo, the same price as in the first quarter of last year.

The Netherlands was the main market for Peru's organic bananas, with 13,641 tons worth 9.7 million dollars, accounting for 30% of all shipments. These figures reflect a 28% drop in the volume and value of shipments. The average price received in this country stood at US$0.71 per kilogram.

It was followed by Panama with 10,132 tons, 6.5 million dollars, and a 20% share. Panama increased its imports of Peruvian organic bananas by 2% in volume. The average price was 0.65 dollars per kilogram, 2% below 2021.

The United States purchased 6,882 tons of Peruvian organic bananas for 4.4 million dollars, accounting for 14% of all shipments. Exports to this market fell by 47% in volume and 48% in value. The average price decreased by 3 percent to $0.65 per kilogram.
