US: Target updates guidance, shares plans to optimize inventory
In an effort to continue its market share gains and record growth, Target Corp. has released its plans to right-size its inventory throughout the rest of 2022. During the second quarter, the retailer will take several actions, including canceling orders, removing excess inventory and taking additional markdowns. Target also plans to add holding capacity near U.S. ports to help combat the effects of supply chain constraints, take pricing actions to address the impact of high fuel costs and work with suppliers to shorten distances and lead times for products.

Autonomous-vehicle provider Gatik has embarked on multi-year commercial partnership with Georgia-Pacific, one of the world's largest manufacturers and distributors of tissue, pulp and paper-based packaging, and KBX, the transportation arm for Koch Industries and an independent Koch company. Under this partnership Gatik will automate part of the Georgia-Pacific-KBX on-road transportation network in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, delivering goods 24/7 across a network of 34 Sam’s Club locations.

Carrefour Brasil to elect new board members, sets governance norms
Supermarket chain Carrefour Brasil said that its board approved calling a shareholders meeting to elect new board members and update governance standards. Alexandre Bompard was chosen as candidate to be the chairman of Carrefour Brasil's board and Abilio Diniz as candidate for vice chairman, it said in a securities filing. The vote is scheduled for July 7. The move comes as Carrefour Brasil, also known as Atacadao SA, completed its acquisition of food retailer Grupo BIG nearly a year after first announcing the deal, which valued BIG at about $1.3bln.

South Africa's SPAR Group sees turnover up 5.2% in first half
South Africa's SPAR Group has reported turnover of R67.6bln (€4.12bln) in the six months to 31 March, a 5.2% increase in the previous year. The group, which also boasts operations in Ireland, Poland and Switzerland, said that profits in its foreign operations have 'come under pressure' due to increased labour and energy costs. It reported a 7.1% increase in group operating profit for the period, to R1.8bln (€110mln).

E.Leclerc, Carrefour make most gains in latest Kantar data for France
Rivals E.Leclerc and Carrefour were the best performers in the French grocery market during the period from 18 April to 15 May, new data from Kantar has shown. E.Leclerc reported a 0.2 percentage point increase in share in the P5 period, driven by the performance of its store network, while significant media investment has also lifted the retailer's share of voice. Carrefour continued its good form, reporting a 0.2 percentage point increase in the period, with its Carrefour, Carrefour Market and Carrefour Proximity channels all seeing a 'dynamic' performance, according to Kantar.

Belgium: Colruyt to start home deliveries
Belgian supermarket chain Colruyt has announced it will start delivering groceries to customers in Antwerp and Brussels. The Belgian market leader currently only offers pick-ups from stores. The Colruyt Group announces it will further invest in stores in Belgium, France and Luxembourg, but mostly sees potential in major cities. “We have a smaller market share in urban areas, so now we want to focus on those to catch up as soon as possible,” Jo Willemyns said during a strategic update.

1 in 3 Brits happy to switch supermarket due to poor online service
Supermarkets that fail to offer intuitive, fast and effective on-site search and click-and-collect options on their website are at risk of losing in-store customers, according to new data by Algolia. Algolia’s survey, which consisted of a nationally representative sample of 2,000 UK shoppers aged 16 and over, found that 29% of shoppers said they would consider switching from their usual supermarket to another if it offered better online search.

Romania's food retail turnover seen at 30 bln EUR in 2021 (survey)
The domestic food retail turnover could exceed 142bln RON (approx. 30blnEUR) in 2021 amid the advance of consumption, but also of heightened inflationary pressure, shows a KeysFin survey. (note: 1EUR = approx. 5RON). "Food retail turnover increased by almost 10% compared to 2019 and was 97% above the figure of 2011, hitting the almost 130blnRON estimated for 2020. For 2021, KeysFin analysts estimate that the threshold of 142blnRON will be exceeded, having as background of the increasing consumption and heightened inflationary pressures," the document reads.

UK: Asda extends delivery deal with Uber Eats
Asda has expanded its grocery delivery partnership with Uber Eats, adding 88 stores across the UK. Asda says it can now offer delivery in as little as 30 minutes through Uber Eats in 405 different places. The supermarket is also developing its delivery menus, offering bundles such as a “vegan stock-up” and a “breakfast fry-up” in addition to individually bought items.

Ireland: Tesco must sell Joyce family’s Oranmore outlet to complete purchase of other stores
Tesco must sell the Joyce’s Supermarket outlet in Oranmore in order for its purchase of the rest of the chain to go ahead, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has ordered. Tesco has made a legally binding commitment to divest the Joyce’s supermarket in Oranmore, Co Galway as a going concern to a suitable purchaser, who will be subject to CCPC approval, the regulator said.

Holland: Jumbo joins employer's association E-Commerce Netherlands
Dutch retailer Jumbo has announced it has joined employers' association E-commerce Netherlands for its online activities. As a result, new Jumbo Online employees who will start working for the group from 20 June 2022 onwards will come under the collective labour agreement for E-commerce Netherlands.
