Daily Harvest announced that it is teaming up with notable athletes committed to encouraging Americans to "Eat the Solution" and consume more organic fruits and vegetables every day. Blake Griffin (Brooklyn Nets), Carmelo Anthony (Los Angeles Lakers), Jared Goff (Detroit Lions), Trea Turner (Los Angeles Dodgers), Kemba Walker (New York Knicks), and other all-star athletes have invested in Daily Harvest through Patricof Co, a highly specialized private investment and advisory platform for professional athletes, that will bring to life their collective commitment to a better food system. The athletes were part of the company's Series D financing, which closed in Q1 2022.

Just over six decades ago, shoppers eagerly awaited the grand opening of Target Corp.’s first store in Roseville, Minnesota. Bingo the most profitable supermarket in Bosnia-Herzegovina
The five largest food retailers in Bosnia and Herzegovina reported an increase profits in 2021 compared to the previous year, achieving a total of BAM170mln (€86.9mln). According to an analysis by local portal Capital, the market leader, Tuzla-based Bingo, earned BAM86mln (€44mln) in profits on revenue of BAM1.4bln (€716mln) for the year.

Appetito acquires Tunisian e-grocer Lamma
Cairo-based grocery delivery startup Appetito has acquired Tunisian startup Lamma for an undisclosed sum, it said in a press release. The merger is expected to close by the end of 3Q2022 and will give Appetito access to Lamma’s markets in Tunisia and Morocco.

Italy: Unicoop Firenze sees sales and profit growth in 2021
Italian regional cooperative Unicoop Firenze reported gross retail sales of €2.4bln in 2021, representing 1.3% growth on the previous year. Revenue increased 1.6% year-on-year to €2.52bln, while net profit totalled over €25mln, or €17mln after taxes. Thanks to the positive result in 2021, the cooperative's net assets grew to €1.73bln.

Australia: Woolworths takes mini supermarkets program national with 25 more sites set to open in schools and inclusive recruitment centres
Australia’s largest retailer announced it will roll out 25 more mini Woolies supermarkets across every state and territory by June next year, providing a safe and inclusive experience for participants who have learning or development delays with valuable life experiences. Clarke Road School in Hornsby has been launched with the help of Woolworths’ state construction team, who created the purpose-built mini supermarket in a storage unit refurbished by the Ku-ring-gai Rotary. The team re-built accessible pathways into the mini supermarket, re-planted the outdoor fruit and vegetable patch for students to learn the importance of harvesting fresh fruit and vegetables and tidied up the chicken pen.

China: Online grocer Dingdong Maicai halts operations in several lower-tier cities
Dingdong will stop providing delivery services in two cities in the eastern province of Anhui - Xuancheng and Chuzhou - from 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to a May 29 report from Ahwang (in Chinese), a regional media outlet. The firm will also halt operations in the northern city of Tangshan in Hebei province and the southern city of Zhuhai in Guangdong province around the same time.

Portugal: Sonae's MC arm sees first-quarter sales up 3.8%
Portuguese food retail group MC, part of Sonae SGPS and formerly known as Sonae MC, has reported first-quarter 2022 sales of €1.29bln, up 3.8% year-on-year and 2.2% higher on a like-for-like basis. Hypermarket sales totalled €421mln (+1.4% y/y and +1.9% LFL), while supermarket sales amounted to €639mln (no change y/y and -2.1% LFL).

Israel: Shufersal blames Covid relaxations for weak results
Israeli supermarket chain Shufersal Ltd. reported weak results for the first quarter of 2022. The company attributed the poor performance to the end of Covid lockdowns, and the timing of the Passover holiday, which last year boosted sales by falling in the first quarter. Shufersal's revenue in the first quarter of 2022 was NIS3.5bln, down 7% from NIS3.8bln in the first quarter of 2021. Net profit in the first quarter of 2022 was NIS27mln, down 76% from the first quarter of 2021.

Carrefour UAE to replace plastic bags at checkout counters with starch alternatives
Carrefour UAE, which is owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim, is to offer a sustainable alternative to plastic bags in response to new government policy banning the use of single-use plastic. The retailer will provide plant-based bags made of starch at its checkout counters. These will be available for 25 fils at Carrefour stores across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain from 1st June and in Dubai as of 1st July. They take less than six months to fully decompose.

UK retailers raise prices by most since July 2011 - BRC
British retailers raised prices at the fastest pace in more than a decade last month, driven by the rapidly rising cost of food and increased energy and transport costs for stores, an industry body said. The British Retail Consortium (BRC), which represents supermarkets and other large retail chains, said average prices among its members last month were 2.8% higher than a year earlier, the biggest annual increase since May 2011.
