Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market Report - Week 21

Imported fruit sales are stable, and sweet oranges from the USA sell particularly well

Sales conditions and product movement in Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market are more or less the same in week 21 as in the previous two weeks.

Most of the imported grapes come from Chile, including red grapes, green grapes, and black grapes. There is also a smaller supply volume of seedless red grapes and 'Autumn Crisp' green grapes from Australia.

One trader mentioned that the product movement is mediocre at the moment. Another common import is citrus fruit, including oranges, grapefruit, and lemons. Sweet oranges from the USA sell better than Egyptian oranges, said one trader, because these oranges enter the Chinese market around Chinese Spring Festival [1 February, 2022] and their supply season continues until July. And they taste sweet. One trader pointed out that only these oranges sell quickly at the moment. The retail price of Egyptian oranges is around 160 yuan [23.89 USD] per box. And product movement is average.

South African grapefruits recently entered the Chinese market, but the price already dropped significantly. South African lemons only entered the market two weeks ago. Their current price ranges between 180-230 yuan [26.87-34.34 USD] per box. Traders receive great feedback on the product quality of South African lemons, which is better than in previous years. Product movement is quite smooth. The price of US lemons is 50% higher than the price of South African lemons, but they are still more popular because their product quality is even higher. The most common apple varieties in the import market are New Zealand Gala apples and Red Rose apples. Both varieties sell equally well. There is also a small supply volume of New Zealand Sonya apples. According to traders the sales conditions in the apple market are regular, although the cost price of apples is slightly higher this year. And product movement depends on the volume of deliveries. As more shipping containers arrive, product movement slows down, and the other way around.

New Zealand red pears

Some of the other import fruits, such as Belgian pears, have already entered the final phase of their sales season. Product movement is average now, but according to traders the pears moved quickly when they just entered the market.

There are also red pears from New Zealand. The red appearance of this pear attracts the attention of buyers. The New Zealand red pears generally enter the market in May and June. Their product movement is somewhat slow, because the selling price was too high when they first entered the market. The price declined somewhat, but buyers who purchased at high prices earlier in the season have difficulty selling their pears. That is why overall product movement is still somewhat slow. Other import fruits include a variety of Chilean plums, which sell in May and June, and a small volume of US cherries.

Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market also features a wide variety of Southeast Asian fruits, such as frozen durian from Malaysia. These products are available all year round and their product movement is excellent. However, when Thai durian enter the market, competition intensifies.

The price of Thai durian fluctuates, while the price of frozen durian from Malaysia is rather stable. Fresh Thai durian sells for 700-800 yuan [104.50-119.43 USD] per box, while frozen durian from Malaysia sells for 1,650 [246.32 USD] per box (although the prices differ per brand). Malaysian durian suffers from the arrival of Thai durian, because Malaysian durian is more expensive. Other Southeast Asian import fruits include pineapples from the Philippines. Their product movement has recently slowed down. (Photo left: Malaysian durian)

Yunnan Shine Muscat grapes

Cantaloupe

Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market also sells premium domestic fruits such as the ever popular domestic blueberries. The supply season of Yunnan blueberries is almost over, but supply from other production areas (such as Sichuan) is about to begin. If the product quality is good, then there are no problems selling blueberries. A lot of traders also sell Shine Muscat grapes from Yunnan. Their sales conditions are great.

Domestic pitahaya

Yunnan Driscoll's blueberries

The supply volume of domestic pitahaya is growing. They mostly come from Hainan and supply lasts all year long, but this is the time of year when pitahaya enter the market in large volumes. Depending on the size, one box contains 5-8 pitahaya. The larger ones are slightly more expensive, but they sell well. They are even more popular in north China. Other domestic fruits in Guangzhou Market include Xinjiang plums, which appear in the market between May and July; Yunnan honey peaches, which entered the market in May; as well as cantaloupe, cherry tomatoes, guava, and watermelons.
