3,500 Nigerian growers targeted for new hybrid tomato & cabbage tests

Some 3,500 Nigerian tomato farmers have been targeted for a new and improved hybrid tomato variety in two northern states. The hybrid tomato variety known as “Xaman,” developed by Bayer in collaboration with Sassakawa and Agara, has early maturity of between 70-75 days and can be planted in the dry and rainy seasons.

The team leader Sassakawa, Isaac Eni, while speaking during a field day held at Danwata in Soba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, explained that the new hybrid tomato is of the fresh market with saladette fruit type. He explained that two local government areas each were selected in Kaduna and Kano states for the pilot plantation of the germane crop.

The Xaman hybrid tomato has a high-performance plant that produces big deep red-colored fruits that are widely adaptable.
