Week 10, the second week of March, concluded with a drop in the prices of peppers and aubergines, stable prices for Almeria's greenhouse cucumbers, and an increase in tomato, zucchini, and green bean prices over the previous week due to a mismatch between supply and demand.
According to the Observatory of Prices and Markets of the Junta de AndalucĂa, the average price of tomatoes increased by 10-15% over the first week of March. "The productive transition suffered by tomatoes between March and April is allowing tomato producers to get the highest average price of the season."
Andalusian tomatoes have obtained very good results for the third consecutive month in the export markets, the Junta stated. "Demand is high, supply from the Netherlands and Belgium is minimal, and Andalusian production is not fully able to satisfy the European markets," they added.
"This favorable price situation for Andalusian producers will last until the beginning of April, a period in which Dutch tomato production will gradually displace Andalusian tomatoes from the main European markets," the report highlights.
Zucchini prices improved in the second week of March because of the reduction in Moroccan production and the decrease in Almeria's supply.
"There was a wide range of quality in the marketed batches, as the products marketed in these dates coincided with products from advanced plantations and a reduced volume of spring plantations. The decrease in Moroccan competition has a direct effect on the prices of zucchini from Almeria."
"The production of zucchini in Central Europe is scarce. The Netherlands and Belgium will not have zucchini to export to the rest of Europe until April."
Finally, the Junta de Andalucia stated that the flat bean prices paid to producers increased by 9% when compared to the first week of March, while round bean prices decreased by 1%.
"The production of green beans remained stable throughout the week, with small additions of product from the new spring plantations," the Observatory's report for week 10 stated.
