Packaging as a pioneer - Transformation & Circular Economy

German Packaging Congress on May 17 and 18, 2022

Packaging as a pioneer in the transformation to a circular economy
At the German Packaging Congress on May 17 and 18, 2022, leaders and decision-makers from business, politics, research and NGOs will discuss key aspects of establishing a circular economy. The short presentations, talks, discussion rounds and best practice examples at the "Summit of the Packaging Industry" will address key aspects of sustainability, product stewardship, climate protection, recycling
and digitalization.

The congress, organized by the German Packaging Institute e. V. (dvi) will also take place virtually this year. Using a special matchmaking tool, participants can arrange individual meetings in order to generate leads and maintain contacts.

"For the packaging industry, topics such as sustainability, product responsibility and the circular economy are not new. Since the first packaging regulations in the early 1990s, packaging has been pioneering these fields. To this day, the industry is still spearheading the establishment of the circular economy," says Kim Cheng, managing director of the Deutsches Verpackungsinstitut e. V. (dvi).

Topics in focus
"At the virtual German Packaging Congress 2022, we will continue to advance these and other key contemporary issues," Cheng states. "To this end, we are looking at energy, climate and the future, for example, and examining the role of packaging in these fields. We want to clarify how big a contribution the Circular Economy can make to climate neutrality. We look at Extended Producer Responsibility, analyze aspects such as litter funds and plastic taxes, give an overview of the EU's regulatory activities, and consider not only the legal frameworks, we also look at the opportunities and potential of digitalization in relation to sustainability and the circular economy."

Top-class line-up
Speakers at the congress include computer scientist, economist and globalization shaper Prof. Dr. Dr. Franz-Josef Radermacher; the head of the Sustainable Products and Production, Circular Economy Department at the Federal Environment Agency, Dr. Bettina Rechenberg; the officer of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, Dr. Matthias Klein; the Managing Director of EUROPEN, Francesca Stevens; and high-ranking representatives from Nestlé Germany and Coca-Cola. The dvi will introduce more speakers in the coming weeks.

Contacts, leads and network
Using a special B2B matchmaking tool, congress participants will have the opportunity to hold individual meetings with other attendees. "We already used this virtual networking option last year. It has proven its worth and gives our participants the opportunity to generate leads, network with new contacts or maintain existing contacts in the virtual space as well," says Kim Cheng. The registration form will be activated by the German Packaging Institute in the next few weeks. Information and form can be found on the dvi website.
