Spanish and Dutch sales of peppers to the EU in 2021 decreased over the previous year, while Turkey and Morocco increased their sales.
According to data shared by Hortoinfo, last year Spanish pepper sales in the EU fell by 12.76% over the previous year, going from 648.54 million kilos in 2020 to 565.8 in 2021 (82.74 million kilos less). Part of this decline has been offset by a 14.75% increase in pepper exports to the United Kingdom, as the country went from exporting 106.4 million kilos of peppers to the UK in 2020 to 122.09 million kilos last year.
Despite the reduction in volume, Spain is still the country that sells the most pepper to its Community partners. In 2021, Spanish sales of this vegetable accounted for 42.07% of all peppers purchased in the EU.
In 2021, Spanish pepper sales to the EU amounted to 974.23 million euros, i.e. 7.55% less than the 1,053.75 million euros achieved in 2020. The price achieved in 2021 was €1.72/kg, i.e. 6.17% higher than in 2020.
Dutch sales decreased by 2.3%. The country has sold 281.57 million kilos of peppers to the EU in 2021, i.e. 6.63 million kilos less than in 2020. Dutch pepper exports to the EU stood at 582.05 million euros, with an average price of 2.07 €/kg, i.e. 20.34% more expensive than the Spanish product.
Morocco was the EU's third-largest pepper supplier in 2021. Morocco sold 135.5 million kilos of peppers to the EU, i.e. 12.45% or 15.01 million kilos more than in the previous year. Moroccan pepper exports to the EU amounted to 123.01 million euros, and their average price was 0.91 €/kg.
Turkish pepper exports to the EU increased by 18.11%. The country was the EU's fourth-largest pepper supplier with 106.87 million kilos (16.39 million kilos more than in the previous year), worth 124.61 million euros, and an average price of 1.17 €/kg.
In general, the Member States purchased 1,344.95 million kilos of peppers in 2021, i.e. 5.94% less than in the previous year.
