Market conditions influence demand for organic vegetables

Thanks to the stable weather in the region, supplies of organic Mexican vegetables including celery, broccoli, cauliflower and asparagus are steady. Supplies are also similar to last year at this time in terms of volume.

Alejandro Jimenez with Campos Borquez, a vertically integrated organization focused on organic production, Fair Trade and Regenerative Agriculture based in Scottsdale, AZ, notes that supplies are coming out of Ciudad Obregon in Sonora, Mexico. Competing supplies in the meantime are coming from Yuma AZ, El Centro, CA, Mexicali B.C and Caborca, Mexico.

“In the next few weeks, we expect to have steady volume on organic celery all the way into mid-April,” says Jimenez, who is based in Nogales, AZ. “We expect to end our broccoli and cauliflower by March and asparagus is year-round.”

Slower demand currently
Meanwhile, demand has been slower for organic vegetables this season says Jimenez. “Many factors have affected market conditions starting with transportation shortages or extreme weather conditions in the East,” he says. That said, the population has shifted towards overall healthier eating. “We see a big demand in juicing, foodservice and overall, families are consuming fresh vegetables. Organic wet vegetables have also seen an increase in demand.”

As for pricing, this year Jimenez says prices have been fluctuating throughout the season.

Overall growers and shippers in the industry of course also continue to contend with inflation on a number of production inputs, anything from packaging to transportation and more.
