France: 2021 production of ware potatoes lower than in 2020

Production figures for 2021 from the survey via the UNPT Panel, and data from Agreste for the other basins.

In 2021, the surface areas covered 153,840 ha, which is 3% less than in 2020.

The national average gross yield for 2021 was 44.1 t/ha, which is higher than in 2020 (+0.5 t/ha) and higher than the average of the past 5 years (2016-2021, + 1.0 t/ha). For the UNPT Panel area, the gains are similar given the high representativeness of its surface area. The average for the 5 basins from the UNPT Panel is still superior, at 45.5 t/ha.

The French production of ware potatoes reached 6,781,369 t this year, compared to 6,915,062 t in 2020 (-1.9%), and +10.1% more than the 5-year average.

The 2021 harvest was characterized by significant levels of physiological defects (hollow hearts, green, cracks…) and/or pest damage (wireworms, slugs…). The assessment of the marketed net (quantity really valued) will therefore be all the more important this year for producers, especially in fresh.
