Nadir Sahin (Sahin Karlsruhe) on the Turkish grape season:

"Peak season will end in about two weeks"

Turkish Sultana grapes are still available in abundance, but the campaign is nevertheless coming to an end. "Smaller quantities will be available until the end of the year, but the main season is expected to end in about two weeks," says Nadir Sahin, a buyer and seller of fruit and vegetables at the family-owned company of the same name at the Karlsruhe wholesale market.

The specialized wholesaler offers its customers - mainly independent retailers, weekly market vendors and restaurateurs - light-colored as well as red and dark Sultana grapes. "The season started some two months ago: It is felt that the dark grapes are enjoying increasing popularity, whereas in the past it was the light ones that were more well received. From my point of view, the price trend is more or less the same," says Sahin, who sells his products for an average of 12 euros per 5 kg, depending on the quality.

Light Sultana grapes from Turkey are characterized by their golden skin color. The later product is marketed in bags due to the temperature, according to Nadir Sahin (r).

Stable market for pomegranates
In addition to Sultana grapes, Sahin is currently sourcing plenty of pomegranates from Turkey as well. "Despite tighter border controls due to Corona, the quality of pomegranates is definitely very good. As a rule, the bigger the fruit, the more expensive it is. The larger calibers are still the most popular in the pomegranate sector. In practice, this means 7-8 pieces per 5-kg pome."

Although other Mediterranean countries now produce pomegranates on a large scale, Turkish produce is unbeatable during the peak season, he said. "Spain, Italy and Israel usually cannot compete with Turkey, although the Italian quality is not bad this year. Spanish fruits are a bit whiter and, above all, sweeter, while pomegranates from Turkey's Antalya growing region are sweeter and more tart.  Therefore, they more popular with many customers," Sahin says.

Citrus of the "Der Flieger" brand

Exclusive brand
Furthermore, the European citrus season is also in full swing at Sahin. According to Sahin, Spain is far ahead in the citrus segment. "We are carrying the "Der Flieger" brand in our assortment as of this year and this puts us in a unique selling proposition at the Karlsruhe wholesale market."
