Emmanuel Schaffner, Verduyn:

“All lights are green for this carrot season”

This year, the company Verduyn harvested its first carrots slightly earlier than usual, around the 15th of July, and the field harvest is now almost finished. “Depending on the temperatures, it will last for another 15 days approximately. Then, we will switch to the refrigerated carrots which we started storing on October 18th. We plan to sell those until the end of May, or even the beginning of June,” explains Emmanuel Schaffner, sales representative at Verduyn France.

Very satisfactory quality and good yields
For the moment, all lights are green for this season. “We are very satisfied with the quality and calibers of the carrots. It hasn’t necessarily been the case for calibers or length in the past 3 or 4 years due to the lack of water. This year, the carrots are good in length and calibers, the yields are very good and the quality is especially great. We are expecting better yields than last year, with 140,000 to 150,000 tons of carrots for the whole year.”

Fluid sales thanks to good consumption
The mild climate in October slowed down carrot sales in favor of other vegetables, but at the moment, the consumption level is quite satisfactory. “The colder temperatures since the beginning of November have boosted the consumption of winter vegetables. Sales have clearly accelerated, and the public holidays in France have also had a positive effect on the demand.”

Doubled storage capacity
Generally speaking, the vegetable demand from the clients of the company has been increasing for 5 years, which has led the company to expand. “We have observed a change in the consumption habits of the French. We are in constant development for all our products, including cabbage, carrots and leeks. That’s why we have doubled our storage facilities at the Wancourt site.”
