HMC43021 the new fennel by HM.Clause

The strength of a horticultural reference lies in its adaptability to a changing climate

HMC43021 is an autumn fennel variety from the Italian seed company HM. Clause. This selection has been tested for 4 years. Starting next year, it will be introduced to the market. Gustavo Accadia and Nico La Marca talked about the characteristics of this new fennel variety.

Gustavo Accadia

"This season, several plots of land were sown with this variety, in order to evaluate its characteristics together with growers and traders. HMC43021 is a variety about 90 days old, showing a rustic type of behavior. It adapts well, to different areas and climatic conditions. Compared to other varieties, it has a white and turgid stem, with a very small taproot. This last aspect makes it possible to obtain a crop with a very low oxidation point, allowing a longer shelf life and a more elegant presentation of the processed crop," said Gustavo Accadia, Campania-Calabria sales manager.

"During the different visits with operators from the sector, one element that always stood out was its rusticity. The variety is distinguished by its resistance to high humidity and sudden temperature changes, as well as a very high resistance to phytopathologies and physiopathologies. The plant is very healthy, and it offers, above all, security in terms of harvest. This fennel does present itself in a very satisfactory way throughout the chain. The cycle of the variety, which does not fear the heat, is suitable for transplanting from 10 August in Apulia, through August and September in Basilicata, and up to transplanting in the first ten days of September in Calabria".

Genetic improvement is the beating heart at HM. Clause and the company has been a world leader in 100% Italian fennel for several years. "We believe that we can improve the genetic material on the market by listening to the demands of growers and traders. There are varieties that make the difference and that you can rely on and these are destined to become market leaders. HMC43021 is one of them. We are happy to have selected, tested and presented it to the supply chain and the market," said Nico La Marca, Development Manager North Apulia and Molise.

HMC43021

"The selection HMC43021 has a number of characteristics that make it stand out, including elasticity at transplanting, a long harvesting period and strong resistance to over-ripening. From an agronomic point of view, its excellent vigor makes it possible to save on fertilizers and the use of tired soil. It has no external or internal shoots, even when the plant is under temperature stress, which reduces the likelihood of basal splits that promote the growth of new plants. As a result, there is less chance of cracks that promote rot. The fennel has a round shape and specific gravity is high, the stems are upright and well-proportioned."

"We believe that fennel needs innovations. On 23 November 2021, the variety will be presented to growers and other players in the sector in the province of Foggia. The variety will soon be named Palladio, inspired by the famous architect."
