Reduced production volume leads to supply shortage

Chinese bok choy price increased by more than 80% compared to last year

The Chinese market prices of vegetables have shown a continuous rise in the last few weeks. The prices of spinach and bok choy have increased the most. The current price of bok choy is more than 1 yuan [0.16 USD] per 0.5 kg. That is an increase of more than 80% compared to the same period last year.

"Many vegetable production areas suffered from heavy rainfall in the last few weeks. In some cases the fields were flooded. And a few production areas halted production altogether. The rising price of bok choy is not difficult to understand under these circumstances. Even sub-par bok choy sells for 0.90 yuan [0.14 USD] per 0.5 kg. Last year around this time the price of top-quality bok choy was only around 0.60 yuan [0.09 USD] per 0.5 kg." This is according to Ms. Li Jianying of Beijing Xinfadi Yinglida Fruit and Vegetable Retail Co., Ltd.

Ms. Li Jianying continued:"There are many bok choy production areas and they are widely distributed across the country. Apart from a small supply volume from the northeast, most bok choy comes from Hebei production areas. The production volume there is significantly reduced. In addition, the bok choy season in the northeast is almost over, while the season in Hebei is just starting. The peak period of bok choy supply has not yet arrived. That is why the price of bok choy is likely to remain high for another two weeks. When the market supply volume grows, then the price will come down again."
