The kick-off for the Indian ginger season was about a week and a half ago, and demand is already at a good level. Ever since the pandemic, demand for ginger has increased steadily. One exporter stated that prices are much more competitive nowadays and makes the claim that Indian ginger is superior to that of their Chinese competitors.
With the Indian ginger season starting, Lekharaj, head of business for Indian ginger exporter Greenland Fresco, states that demand has been increasing at a rapid pace: “The Indian ginger season has just started around mid-October and could run up to about April or May. India is the largest producer of Ginger in the world, producing between 1.5 and 2 million tons a year, which is 40-50% of the total global production. India produces almost double the quantity of China and we produce a superior quality product. Demand has been rising at a faster pace for Indian ginger, both domestically and internationally.”
According to Lekharaj the pandemic has impacted the demand for ginger on a global scale. “In the domestic market, mostly Fresh Ginger is consumed. Approximately 10-15% of the product is converted to dry ginger, most of which is exported to various countries. After the Covid-19 pandemic started, demand for ginger has grown significantly across the globe. This is due to the clear health benefits of ginger, as well as it being considered to be an immunity booster. Regions like the USA, Russia as well as European countries are showing a big increase in their consumption and solid quality Indian ginger is penetrating these markets aggressively at a very competitive price.”
Greenland Fresco sees a lot of potential in the European, Russian and North American markets, Lekharaj explains: “A large portion of the Indian ginger is exported to Asian and African countries. Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Morocco, Turkey and Egypt are the major importers from India. Apart from these countries, a reasonably good quantity is being exported to USA, Russia and European markets. There is a huge potential to improve the export volume to these regions soon, with a focused effort to improve process controls in the entire supply chain, as Indian ginger has all the qualities to make it big in these markets.”
As production has steadily increased over the past few years, Lekharaj states that prices are much more competitive now. “Indian's ginger production has increased compared to last season and production has seen exponential growth over the last five years. Weather conditions are good this season, thus we’re expecting good volumes this season. With higher production this season the prices are much more competitive, which results in an advantage over other competitors in international markets, such as China, Brazil and Thailand.”
