Exports increased by 1.2% in the 2020/21 season

China consolidates itself as the second destination country for Chilean fresh fruit

According to the president of the Association of Fruit Exporters of Chile AG (ASOEX), Ronald Bown Fernandez, Chile exported a total of 2,567,717 tons of fresh fruits in the 2020/2021 season, a volume that is 1.2% higher than in the previous year (2019/2020). “This season, North America (the USA and Canada) will continue to be the main market for our fruits in terms of volume, with the reception of 822,479 tons and a growth of 0.5% over the previous season. Asia is the second destination with 737,434 tons, showing the highest growth within the markets (+16.6%),” he stated.

Europe, which until two seasons ago was the second destination for Chilean fruits, currently ranks third with 511,846 tons (-7.5%). It is followed by the Latin American market with 427,936 tons (-1.7%), and the Middle East with 68,032 tons (-28.2%).

At the country level, the 5 main destinations are the United States with 776,533 tons, China-Hong Kong with 521,723 tons, the Netherlands with 206,351 tons, Colombia with 97,733 tons, and England with 89,482 tons.

Chile's top ten fruits for export, in terms of volume, were apples with 636,145 tons and a 1.8% increase over the previous year, table grapes (536,448 tons and -11.2%), cherries (352,474 tons and + 54.2%), kiwis (142,778 tons and -1.7%), plums (121,213 tons and -3.4%), pears (120,460 tons and +6, 9%), blueberries (117,640 tons and + 7.7%), mandarins (99,767 tons and -19.2%), lemons (96,623 tons and + 11.7%) and oranges (93,152 tons and -2.2%).

The main fruit exported to the Far East was the cherry (334,566 tons). Table grapes led exports to the United States with 256,945 tons.

Apples were the main fruit exported to Latin America (248,045 tons), Europe (171,083 tons), and the Middle East (47,609 tons)

Milestones of the 2019/2020 campaign
“Various milestones that are very positive for the fruit industry were achieved during the 2019/2020 season and we should highlight them as part of a joint public-private effort,” the president of ASOEX said. These milestones include the approval of the Systems Approach to export blueberries produced in the Ñuble and Bío-Bío regions to the US, the Systems Approach for stone fruit and table grapes to Brazil, replacing fumigation; the entry of avocados to Australia and Korea, and the entry of cherries to Vietnam.
