Australia: ‘Avo-cargo’ from first-time exporters set for Asian markets

Australian avocado growers are exporting by sea for the first time ahead of a bumper season. National production is forecast to increase by 60 per cent. Avocado exporters in Western Australia and Queensland are trialing refrigerated container shipping to South East Asia and Japan, using controlled atmosphere technology to ensure the fruit arrives in pristine condition after a 20-30 day voyage.

The trials will open the door for many first-time growers to reach international consumers and avoid crowding the Australian market. Avocados Australia expects more than 50 per cent of avocado shipments out of Western Australia this year will be from first-time exporters.
