Back to school promotions were the order of business this week. Snackable items like baby carrots, apples, clementines, grapes, and strawberries were very popular. Retailers dedicated plenty of ad space to school supplies. Some flyers offered quick dinner suggestions for busy families.
Summer is far from over yet in the produce department as a wide array of stone fruit, melons, squash, corn, and tomatoes flood in from local growing areas.
Total ad numbers this week were 327,676, about steady from last week's 324,431. Ad numbers this week were 3% lower than the same week last year. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 200,081 (61% of all ads), onions and potatoes 15,712 (5%), vegetables 109,187 (33%), herbs 891, ornamentals 462, and hemp 1,343. The number of ads for organic produce was 61,401, 19% of total ads.
The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included 18 oz blueberries at 41%, Gala apples at 25%, avocados at 18%, and Navel oranges at 11%. Significant decreases included pineapples at 13% and red cherries at 11%. The sole significant changes in price for onions and potatoes this week was an 11% decrease for Russet potatoes.
Significant increases in vegetable prices this week included only packaged salad at 10%. Significant decreases included cucumbers
at 30%, on-the-vine tomatoes at 19%, and asparagus at 18%.
