The domestic apple season is in its second half now. "The marketing of stock in food retail is progressing in line with the season. The volumes are generally sufficient to meet demand without any problems," says Stefan Recht, joint managing director of the fruit wholesaler of the same name in the heart of the Altes Land.
Local Elstar soon to run out
According to Recht, current prices are satisfactory and stable as well. "Elstar of the usual market sizes (65-75) are traded around 0.72 euros/kg. But there I could imagine that the prices - in parallel with the rapid reduction in stock - will go up somewhat over the next few weeks. After all, in about six weeks we will probably ship out the last products of this year's season."

Jonagold: seamless transition assured
Stocks of Jonagold varieties, on the other hand, are showing a different picture: "In this category, quantities are expected to be sufficient to ensure a seamless transition into the new season," Recht says. Regarding the Jonagold varieties, Recht exclusively trades in pocket calibers, which are currently priced at 0.55Euro/kg.
All in all, the fruit wholesaler speaks of an average apple season. "Local apples have been plentiful so far. In last year's season, on the other hand, we had to import Italian Gala prematurely due to the hoarding purchases at the beginning of the Corona crisis. That probably won't be necessary this year."
Packaging issues in the background
The Recht family business is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and is firmly anchored in the domestic fruit industry. It mainly supplies regionally produced pome fruit to food retail markets in northern and western Germany. The company takes care of the procurement, transport and packaging of the product.
"Whether packaged goods are increasingly in focus in times of crisis is difficult to judge at this point, because we only offer packaged apples. From my point of view, the packaging issue has rather taken a back seat, as meeting the daily needs of the food retailer is now the top priority."
Biodiversity in the Altes Land
Biodiversity and sustainable fruit production
In the longer term, the issue of biodiversity in regional fruit production has always been a key priority for the company. "Educating consumers about biodiversity and sustainable fruit production is very close to our hearts. Accordingly, our fruit farm is managed according to the guidelines of integrated fruit cultivation."
