Italian spring onions appreciated in Northern and Eastern Europe

"We process products such as rocket, spring onions and fennel all year round, which are particularly popular especially on the foreign market," explains Gennaro Napolitano, Sales Manager and Administrator for the F.lli Napolitano facility in Poggiomarino (NA).

"Our assortment varies a lot in winter and summer. In addition, we try to introduce new products every year to meet demand from the domestic and foreign retail chain (respectively 40 and 60% of our business)," explains Raffaele Napolitano.

F.lli Napolitano was set up in 1970 by Gennaro Napolitano and is now managed by his sons Carmine and Giuseppe  and his grandsons: Carmine and his son Francesco manage the Eboli (SA) facility, while Giuseppe and his sons Gennaro and Raffaele run the Poggiomarino (NA) facility.

F.lli Napolitano owns three processing warehouses: two in Poggiomarino (covering 2500 and 3000 sq m) and a third covering 8000 sq m in Eboli.

"Innovation is at the basis of commercialization: we can process the products in a different way thanks to new technology and equipment and state-of-the-art packaging systems guarantee traceability and safety," adds Francesco Napolitano.

"Green onions represents around 30% of our turnover and we grow it on at least 100 hectares every year. It is very popular in both northern and eastern Europe and demand peaks between October and March. The most popular grades are 20 and 40."

"In April-May and November-December we also have red onions, appreciated by both domestic and European retailers. It is indeed a niche product but quotations are 10% higher than those of white onions."

"Fennel, which is also available all year round, is destined to both the Italian and foreign market. We have introduced 500g plastic-free cardboard crates."

"Our products have a high-quality and are sustainable. What is more, they hold the GlobalGAP, IFS, BRC, Grasp and UNI EN ISO 22005:2007 certifications."

"We are currently processing onions rocket, fennel, trocadero lettuce, curly lettuce, white cauliflowers, smooth and curly endive. In the summer, we will introduce light and dark-colored zucchini, round and purple eggplants, red/yellow/green bell peppers and cucumbers grown in protected crops as well as cantaloupe melons and mini-watermelons in open fields."

"Due to the high demand, this year we will also add Iceberg lettuce destined to the Italian market. This lettuce is light, crunchy and rich in water, plus it does not contain fats but rather vegetable protein and folic acid."

"In the future, we would like to strengthen our presence on the Italian market and keep producing our own produce."
