Market at a standstill despite the lack of produce

Azienda Ventura collects artichokes from 500 hectares

"We have been producing and commercializing horticultural products for over 40 years and specialize in artichokes in particular. With around 500 hectares in south-eastern Sicily, we are among the leading producers in our region," explains Christopher Ventura.

Three main varieties: Romanesco, Apollo and Violetto
"When I talk about 500 hectares, I obviously refer to the entire basin - our producers own land in the Vittoria (RG), Acate (RG), Caltagirone (CT), Niscemi (CL) and Gela (CL) areas, while our own crops are located in the Acate area, a few km from the sea. Here, as in other areas particularly suitable for artichoke cultivation, the soil and land conditions give our produce enviable organoleptic conditions."

"We commercialize 70% of the local artichoke production thanks to the cooperation of the 200 producers who work with us. We handle around 3 million heads a year, mainly destined to the domestic market."

Market at a standstill despite the lack of produce
"The 2019/20 season started with an average price of 35 eurocents per head, although the Romanesco variety reached 80 eurocents. For the past few weeks, we have registered around 20 eurocents for Violetto and 40-50 eurocents for Romanesco. This was due to the availability of similar produce from Tunisia and Egypt. Demand is lacking at the moment despite the low availability. We do not understand what is happening."

"Over the past few years, we have reduced our direct relations with the big retail chain to focus more on wholesalers and fresh produce markets. This way, we could focus on production to the great advantage of our working time quality. We have nothing against anybody, it is just a choice that makes us happier."

The warehouse

"Towards the end of the season, from April onward, it is mainly the processing industry that requires our produce. Some of the leading European companies are our clients."
