India: Union Territory Chandigarh levies 2% market fee on agri commodities

The next time citizens of the Union Territory of Chandigarh buy a pineapple, kiwi or broccoli, they will have to pay more now the UT administration decided to levy 2% market fee on these items including 14 agricultural commodities.

The decision in this regard was taken in a meeting on Thursday under the chairmanship of UT adviser Manoj Panda. The meeting was held regarding regulation and levy of market fee 2% on the sale value of 14 agricultural commodities. These commodities will be included in the schedule of regulated commodities in Punjab agricultural produce market Act on the pattern of Punjab mandi board. The UT administration follows Punjab Agricultural Produce Market Act.

A list of 14 agricultural commodities includes pineapple, broccoli, lettuce, avocado, coconut (green and dry), dragon fruit, strawberry, baby corn, shards, cherry, green almonds, jackfruit, date and kiwi.

A senior UT official said that with the inclusion of these commodities in the schedule, their sale will be regulated by Chandigarh market committee.
