Almaverde Bio

Italian organic fruit exported all over Europe

Almaverde Bio exports kiwifruit to Finland, apples to Great Britain and strawberries all over Europe. "We registered a 10% increase in sales in October, however we must say things have not always gone smoothly this year because of the weather. At the moment, the situation is good," explains Canova director Ernesto Fornari.

All types of fruits and vegetables are found in the processing warehouses in Longiano (Forlì-Cesena): "Organic produce consumers are like other consumers, only they are more careful about certain aspects. But there are no differences when it comes to demand and we must meet it."

The weather caused quite a few difficulties during the past few months and the rain in May affected organic crops quite a lot. "However, apricots recovered well and we have had a good year from June 25th and until September."

Strawberries also did well. "Thanks to our cooperation with Coop Sole, we managed to supply high-quality fruits for many months. There was good continuity and the last of the produce was harvested in Calabria only a few days ago. We introduced varieties such as Melissa and Albion, which have proved perfect for organic cultivation."

As for seasonal fruit, organic kiwifruits are increasingly popular. When FreshPlaza visited the warehouse, there was a batch that was destined to Finland. "Demand for ready-to-eat produce is increasing, so we are working on it."

When it comes to clementines, Fornari reports that "in order to be competitive, we need to increase grades and have good fruit, and new varieties are needed to do so. In addition, older groves must be thinned. There is a huge difference between grade 5 and grade 3 clementines."

"Table grapes are available between early July and late October. Quantities are dropping, but quality is good. We have opted for seedless varieties as demanded by the market. I believe the sector must evolve and not be tied by old habits."

"Next year, we are looking to increase our blueberry quantities. We have found some rather acidic land in various regions - from Lombardy to Trentino and from Tuscany to Calabria. What is more, we are looking to strengthen the strawberry segment."
