"Our late peaches take full advantage of market window"

The peak harvest season of honey peaches in China falls around July to August each year. "Currently, the varieties available on the market are very limited. Our Huiquan Xiantao is a late variety planted in March each year and fruits in October, which allows us to better seize the market window. Although there is still market competition, it has now become our sales opportunity,” said Ms. Gu of Shanhe Fruit and Vegetable Cooperative of Wuyuan County.

Although not far apart geographically, consumers in the mainland and Hong Kong have different preferences. “The Hong Kong market has higher standards for quality, both in size and in taste. The Hong Kong market has always been dominated by peaches from Japan. Although the price of these peaches is high, there is still a market for them as they are very well known. There are more varieties available in the mainland market than in Hong Kong. In addition, peaches are sold in ‘jin’ (half a kilogram) in mainland China while sold in Hong Kong by counts.”

Wuyuan County Shanhe Fruit and Vegetable Cooperative sells their peaches via different sales channels. In mainland China, they sell in wholesale markets and online, and in Hong Kong, they sell to wholesale markets and handles retails themselves. "The current prices are very good. The retail price is relatively stable, especially in the mainland. Prices in Hong Kong always fluctuate a little. Wholesale prices are affected more by the weather and production."

“Our growing centers are located at the source of the Weihe River. Our production this year is about 10-15 million kilos, and we hope to further expand the Hong Kong market. Our varieties are unique because we have a unique geographical location and climate conditions, such as high altitude and large temperature differences between day and night. We also introduced to our growing centers the peach cultivation management techniques from Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Our peaches are characterized by a high sugar content that can reach 21 degrees, so they are sweeter than the sweetest apples. They are also very crisp. The most important thing is that they are safe to consume and are suitable for everyone.”
