Victor Bernad, DBS Agro:

“Asians are asking for organic fruit and vegetables more and more”

The organic sector experienced a considerable growth in Europe in recent years, and Asia recently started paying more attention to organic products as well. “We can feel demand for organic fruit and vegetables becoming stronger and stronger,” says Victor Bernad of DBS Agro. “We offer the entire conventional range, including top fruit, various lettuce varieties and outdoor vegetables, in organic as well. Our customers are very positive about our organic fruit and vegetable supply, although they sometimes think the conventional range is more interesting when they notice prices for organic are higher.”

Although the Asians are interested in Western organic products, they have different standards for organic than in Europe. Although the Chinese market is still closed now (except for pears), DBS Agro mostly exports to Hong Kong and Singapore. “We expect this to change soon, but we’ll have to wait and see when that’ll happen. Fortunately we also have the entire European market to supply in addition to Asia.”

“Regarding logistics, exporting to Asia requires a lot of control. Their inspections are very strict, and food safety is very important, so we have to ensure great conditions and an optimal quality. Not a lot can go wrong in that entire process. It continues to be a considerable challenge, but by paying enough attention, we can definitely supply a good product in Asia. We expect this market to only ask for more and more in the coming years, so we’re trying to respond to this market as well as possible,” Victor concludes.

DBS Agro is present at the next Fruit Logistica in Asia. The company is in Hall 5 / U35.
