Egyptian garlic season ending - slow season in Europe

The season for fresh garlic in Egypt is almost coming to an end. According to one exporter the market was fairly slow, especially in Europe. Less consumption made for a slightly more challenging season, but overall it was a satisfying one as well.

In the coming weeks the garlic season in Egypt will be ending, as it has been running since the end of January. According to Mai Yassin, sales manager for Stars of Export, the season was great: “Stars of Export managed to increase the exported quantities during a slow season, thanks to the great quality we had this year. For green garlic the market was especially slow, for the fresh dry garlic this season was okay. As we expected, Taiwan imported a fair amount of the Egyptian garlic.”

According to Yassin, the weather had nothing to do with the slower market: “All in all the weather made for a great season, with good sizes and good quality garlic. The reason the season was slower than what we’re used to, was due to slow consumption in the European market. Luckily this wasn’t our only market, as we also ship large volumes of garlic to Taiwan and Australia. In total we exported about a thousand tons this season.” she said.

With China being a major player when it comes to fresh dry garlic, the competition was fierce: “China is a big player so they gave us quite the competition. For the fresh green garlic there was hardly any competition. In the beginning of the season the prices for fresh green garlic were very high. Later in the season the prices went down but remained at a reasonable rate. Now that the season is wrapping up we expect to finalize the season without any major challenges.” Yassin concludes.
