In week 25, the Fairtrasa group held an international summit with representatives of each of their supply offices and the European sales office in the Dominican Republic. The event took place to reinforce the group spirit, mutual cooperation and develop/strengthen a common vision for the future.
"Early in the week, all representatives paid a visit to the company’s own organic banana plantation located near the port of Manzanillo, Monte Cristi. This location is chosen due to the isolated location away from conventional farms. A rural area where we can offer jobs for the people who work in that area who were before unemployed. We pay special focus on the social project linked to the workers on that farm. Improving the housing conditions of the workers was the first step." said Leon Hijweege of Fairtrasa Holland.
Apart from having its own farm in the Dominican Republic, The Fairtrasa Group also has its own local export company - Agricola Fairtrasa S.A.R.L – which has its operation built on working with a group of selected growers, both organic and organic Fairtrade certified growers. Relatively new to the assortment is the offer of organic Demeter bananas by the end of July.
"From our Ecuadorian partner farm “Las Iguanas” we offer currently organic & organic Fairtrade bananas. This farm is currently in the process of Naturland Certification. Due to its unique location and biodiversity this will be a piece of cake for our team in the Ecuador." Hijweege said.
In general, there blows a refreshing wind through the Fairtrasa Group, which is being felt through the whole organization. In order to transmit these internal changes, Fairtrasa management decided on a subtle refreshment of the brand, reflected in a new box layout. Those first boxes organic avocado’s from Mexico were being packed a bit before the summit.
