Robert Vogel, AGF Direct:

“Smooth cauliflower sales on empty Dutch market, broccoli volumes keep us waiting a while longer”

The Dutch cauliflower season calmly started about two to three weeks ago. “The start was a bit later than we expected, but volumes are now good,” says Robert Vogel of AGF Direct from Zwaagdijk.

The sales of cauliflower are better than expected. “Spanish and French cauliflower are no longer available, so the market’s very clean. This results in a smooth disposal of product. Despite having fairly large volumes at our disposal, the product sells quickly, and for good prices, too,” Robert continues.

The prices for cauliflower (sixes) is between 0.90 and 1.10 euro. “Quality is good as well, so we can’t complain,” Robert smiles. “Demand is good both nationally and internationally.”

The Dutch broccoli season, on the other hand, has only started in dribs and drabs. “We expected to have had a good start in this period, but they’re not growing as well as expected. It’ll be about two or three weeks before volumes improve,” Robert expects.

“Considering import broccoli is about to be out of stock and quality is decreasing, prices are skyrocketing. Prices are even as high as 1.50-1.70 euro for Spanish broccoli.”

In closing, Robert mentions that the iceberg lettuce market is characterised as a fairly stable market. “Supply isn’t extremely high, and the product sells quickly at prices around 4.50 euro.”
