100 tons of Cambodian bananas arrive in Shanghai

The Cambodian container ship Jaku Bhum reached the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone on May 24th, 2019. The ship carried 5 containers with a total of 100 tons of Cambodian bananas. The value of this shipment is around 63.8 thousand USD.

This is the first shipment of Cambodian bananas to reach China since both parties signed the "treaty for quarantine requirements related to Cambodian banana exports to China".

The Chinese market demand for imported bananas is rapidly growing, and the import volume closely follows. Shanghai Waigaoqiao imported a total of 139 thousand tons of bananas in the first quarter of 2019. That is an increase of 188% in comparison with last year. Waigaoqiao is responsible for more than 30% of the banana import in Shanghai port.
