The situation on the leek market has calmed down," says Kees Jansen of Gebroeders Jansen. This cultivation and packaging company is located in Etten-Leur, the Netherlands. "There is no talk of panic. However, winter is over, and the demand has reached a somewhat tamer level."
Leeks still sold for EUR0,65 to EUR0,70 at auction in Venlo last week. However, in Belgium, the auction prices were between EUR0,50 and EUR0,60. "We have had reasonably broad sales. There is, however, no single country that rises to the top when it comes to demand. Italy, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic are all well in the game," says Kees.
"The Dutch supply is not so large now. However, in Belgium and France, there are many more leeks. That, therefore, does put the necessary pressure on the market. The good prices received last autumn and winter made everyone happy with their harvests."
"The leeks are of excellent quality. The leeks were not frozen. Now that it has rained again, the leek supply will increase from April again," expects Kees.
