Acreage increased by 11%, but volumes remained nearly the same

German edible mushroom harvest 2018 unchanged compared to last year

In 2018, 73,200 tons of edible mushrooms were harvested in Germany. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) explains, this means the production of edible mushrooms has remained almost unchanged compared to the previous year. With a share of 98%, almost the entire production accounted for button mushrooms. The rest of the harvest consisted of oyster mushrooms, shiitake and other special mushroom cultures.

The mushroom production area increased by 11% year-on-year to 342 hectares in 2018. 14% of this harvested area was completely managed organically. In 2017, this share was still 12%.

Lower Saxony at the top
Delicious mushrooms are produced on a larger scale only in nine federal states. The two most important federal states are Lower Saxony with a harvesting area of 160 hectares and North Rhine-Westphalia with a harvesting area of 59 hectares.
