Premium fruit trade flourishing in festive period

Cherry prices in China increased by 30%

The Chinese Spring Festival [February 5th, 2019] is almost here. The people in Hefei, Anhui, celebrate with fowl, fish, and meat, but there is one more thing they can not go without during the festive period, and that is fresh fruit. Premium fresh fruit is particularly popular. Even as  prices are rising, the Zhougudui Agricultural Wholesale Market sells more than a hundred tons of cherries per day.

Cherries have become a common item on the table of consumers in Hefei, and they become even more popular during the festive period. The current wholesale price of Chilean cherries is on average 35-48 yuan [5.20-7.13 USD] per 0.5 kg, which is an increase of 9.2% in comparison with the week before, but also an increase of 30% in comparison with the same period last year. A 2.5 kg box of cherries became 20-30 yuan [2.97-4.46 USD] more expensive in one week, but that has not made the fruit any less popular with consumers. The daily trade volume is around 80-100 tons and still the price is rising.
