Lorenz Boll (OGS Südbaden) draws a mixed balance at Stone Fruit Day

Revenues disappointing despite good quality, especially for cherries

Despite the large and high-quality stone fruit harvest in 2018, the fierce competition -from Turkey, among others- made things difficult for the South Baden producers. Not only in the field of drupes, but also for  asparagus and strawberries, there is particularly fierce competition in the domestic market. This was one of the conclusions at this year's Steinobsttag (Stone Fruit Day), last Monday in Blansingen. At the same time, the quality standards in German food retailing are being tightened ever more, said Lorenz Boll, Managing Director of the Fruit Wholesale Market Südbaden (OGS).

The prices are pushed downwards to a large extent and despite the idea of regionalism there is - from the perspective of the producers - too little regional fresh produce on the shelf. Unfortunately, in 2018, despite very good quality, revenues, especially those of cherries, were in part somewhat disappointing. This was due on the one hand to the large supply, on the other hand also to imports from Turkey, Poland, Spain and France, which according to Lorenz Boll brought "excellent produce, albeit with too low price levels" in the trade.
