Recommendations by the Coviro nursery farm

Italy: Varietal selection is crucial for asparagus

In a few days, the nursery farming company Coviro (Cervia, Ravenna) will kick off the marketing of the new produce. The business is specialised in the production and marketing of asparagus. The marketing manager Marcello Sbrighi and the marketing technician Nicola Bernabini analysed the nursery farm’s productive season and other commercial aspects.

The two experts said, “Our nursery farms have sandy soils. The sowing is always carried out in the spring period (end of April, the first days of May). Soon, we are going to harvest the asparagus which grew very well, in 2018. Spring was fresh and rainy. In the first days of May, the temperatures rose consistently, but the emergency regarding the young plants was manageable and uniform”.

Summer was very warm, but there were not many droughts. The subsequent moderate fall was extremely helpful for the well-growth of the plants thanks to a good accumulation of reserve substances. Of course, we took extreme care of both the nutritional and phytosanitary aspects of the nursery farm.

The 2018 asparagus marketing season kicked off very positively, but then it slowed down due to several climatic issues that caused a high concentration of produce in the markets.

Sbrighi and Bernabini continued, “Considering this scenario, we are enough satisfied by the current campaign. We have good demands from North Italy, where the Italian varieties dominate the markets. The agricultural entrepreneurs in Centre-South Italy have still to decide what to do. In the South, we improved our varietal selection and now we can count on varieties which allows us harvesting from mid-February until May”.

Atticus and Starlim are two novel early varieties that are suitable for a forced tunnel and mini-tunnel farming – and also with heated soil.

“Our producers showed us very positive results both in terms of quality and productivity. Anyway, we look forward to seeing the first harvest, which will be carried out within a few weeks”.

Vegalim is one of the most widespread varieties. Even though it is medium-sized, it guarantees high productivity. On the other hand, Grande is a historical variety which is the most farmed one in Centre-South Italy. It is a medium-early variety characterised by good size and high productivity.
