Sales of dates and cherries increase for Christmas

There are some types of fruit that register a peak in sales at specific times of the year. When it comes to dates, that period is Christmas. "Everybody was looking for dates the other morning, mainly shop-owners and greengrocers looking for high-quality produce," reported a wholesale operator.

Large grade and high-quality dates in a deluxe packaging

The operator sells high-quality produce with large grades placed in appealing gift boxes. The produce arrives pre-packaged from Israel.

Dates in one kg packet

"Prices vary depending on the grade. The largest sell at €13.80/kg, while the smallest sell at €10/kg and are just as nice from an organoleptic point of view."

Chilean cherries

Cherries from Chile are also on sale. Prices reflect the period but they are not too high after all: approximately €16/kg wholesale. Then it will depend on the retailer, sometimes they increase them by as much as three times!

"There are many alternatives and retailers try to have a wide range available to make more sales. However we can't say we are witnessing substantial increases before Christmas. I hope things will improve in the last week before Christmas."
